Wednesday, September 9, 2009, the Chris Bosh Foundation hosted a back to school event at Crary Elementary School in Detroit, MI. At the event approximately 50 youth received Nike backpacks, Chris Bosh t-shirts and school supplies on behalf of the Chris Bosh Foundation. Today also marked the beginning of the Detroit Mentoring Group. The group meets from September - April, three times a month. Different speakers volunteer thier time and will speak to Mrs. Nancy Mayes' third grade class, and Marie Tell's fifth grade class. With the program, we hope to expose the youth to different career goals while focusing on education and literacy. The Chris Bosh Foundation is eager to work with Crary Elementary, their new principal Ms. Diane Goins, Mrs. Mayes, Ms. Tell, and the parents of the youth to help encourage their dreams.

If you live in the Detroit area, and are interested in volunteering to speak to the youth, please do not hesitate to contact Adriane Mayes ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Bosh Returns from Journey Through South Africa
Written by adriane

Before NBA players and coaches sampled the rich basketball talent of Africa, they first had a lesson on the storied past of South Africa at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg.

Beginning in 1948, the white elected National Party government implemented the policy of apartheid which turned 20 million people into second-class citizens, damning them to a life of servitude, humiliation and abuse. Between '48 and '71, over 150 laws were passed to further widen the gap between whites and blacks, such as the Immorality Act (1950), which outlawed sex and marriage across racial lines and the Reservation of Separate Amenities Act (1953), which prohibited different racial groups from using the same public facilities like toilets, parks or beaches

The Apartheid Museum illustrates the story of the system and the struggle to overthrow its tyranny.

A moving and eye-opening experience for the players, the visit proved to be a fitting and poignant start to BWB Africa.
